This course will provide you with a general overview of how to handle chemicals safely in a research laboratory or on the job. We'll first discuss common chemical hazards, teaching you how to recognize what each pictogram from the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) represents. Next, we'll explain the routes chemicals can use to enter your body and the differences between acute and chronic exposure. We'll introduce you to the information that can be found on the manufacturer’s label and discuss the rules regarding Safety Data Sheets. You'll learn how to store and transport chemicals safely, how to dispose of waste and how to address confirmed chemical hazards. Finally, we'll explain how to react effectively to a few emergency situations, including chemicals in the eyes and personal contamination. Upon successful completion of this course, you'll have a better understanding of how chemicals can affect your body and the steps you can take to handle them safely.

Objectives

  • Recognize the hazards represented by the pictograms from the Globally Harmonized System (GHS)
  • Identify the four routes chemicals can use to enter your body
  • Locate essential information on manufacturer’s labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Transport, store and dispose of chemicals and other hazardous substances safely
  • React effectively to emergency situations like personal contamination
